A monk joined a monastery and immediately took a vow of silence. He vowed that he would break his silence every five years and speak only two words every five years.
Accordingly he remained silent for five years, and then went to the Abbot, who congratulated him on his achievement. He was anxious to know what two words the monk will speak.
The monk just said, “Bed hard.”
Five more years pass. The monk sees the Abbot again.
He then speaks the following two words: “Food bad.”
Five years later, the monk again visits the Abbot and says, “I quit.”
“Well, you might as well quit,” the Abbot responded. “You’ve been complaining ever since you got here!”
Does not matter if we speak less or more, but if complain is all we do, then how is it going to do us any good? Remaining silent but having a constant dialog of complaints within is no different. Instead when you replace complaints with gratefulness you will witness a transformation that will astonish you.
