Grey Hair

Grey Hair

A curious child asked his mother, “Mommy, why are some of your hairs turning grey?”

The mother tried to use this occasion to teach her child, “It is because of you, dear. Every bad action of yours will turn one of my hairs grey!”

After a moment’s thought, the child replied, “Now I know why grandmother has only grey hairs on her head!”

This joke illustrates how easy it is for tables to be turned on us. Rather than bury our head in hubris, we must use kindness and empathy to guide our actions. This story illustrates:

One day, a poor boy who was selling goods from door to door to pay his way through school, found he had only one thin dime left, and he was hungry. He decided he would ask for a meal at the next house. However, he lost his nerve when a lovely young woman opened the door.

Instead of a meal he asked for a drink of water. She thought he looked hungry so brought him a large glass of milk.

He drank it slowly, and then asked, “How much do I owe you?” Continue reading

Yoga Has Transformed My Life Inside-Out!

Ketna Shah: Yoga Transformed My Life

Ketna Shah

Yoga Teachers Of Colorado (YTOC) recently featured an article on Ketna Shah, who is co-founder and co-editor of MyLifeYoga. Here are some excerpts:

How long have you been practicing yoga and how did you get into teaching?

I was born and bought up in India. I was introduced to yoga when young but I did not pursue it seriously then. I came to the west in my 30s and found life quite stressful, as a mom, wife, and a working executive. I took up yoga once again to relieve my stress. When my husband relocated to a different state I used this as an opportunity to make a change in my career and take up full time teaching of yoga. I have been teaching yoga for more than 10 years.

What did you do prior to teaching yoga and/or what do you do in addition to teaching yoga?

Prior to teaching yoga I had my own business. I also worked as a financial controller in a small software company. Besides teaching yoga, I am a yoga therapist and certified Ayurvedic nutritionist. I love cooking and I conduct cooking classes that demonstrate how easy it is to cook healthy and delicious vegan and vegetarian meals. I love hiking in the mountains and traveling.

What type(s) of yoga do you teach?

I have learnt yoga in India from one of the most authentic teachers of Yoga. My teachers are A. G. Mohan and Indra Mohan. They both are among the few direct disciples of the legendary T. Krishnamacharya who is the father of modern yoga, as we know it. My yoga style is gentle breath yoga and is suitable for people of all fitness levels and all ages. Continue reading

Half Sisters

Half Sisters

One Sunday morning Joe burst into the living room and said: “Dad, Mom, I have some great news for you! I am getting married to the most beautiful girl in town. She lives a block away and her name is Susan.”

After dinner, Joe’s dad took him aside and said: “Son, I have to talk with you. Your mother and I have been married 30 years. She’s a wonderful wife but she has never offered much excitement in the bedroom, so I used to fool around with women a lot. Susan is actually your half-sister, and I’m afraid you can’t marry her.”

Joe was heartbroken. After eight months he eventually started dating girls again. A year later he came home and very proudly announced: “Dianne said yes! We are getting married in June.”

Again his father insisted on another private conversation and broke the sad news: “Diane is your half-sister too, Joe, I am very sorry about this.”

Joe was furious. He finally decided to go to his mother with the news.

“Dad has done so much harm. I guess I am never going to get married,” he complained. “Every time I fall in love, Dad tells me the girl is my half-sister.”

His mother just shook her head and said: “Don’t pay any attention to what he says, dear. He’s not really your father!!!”

Count Your Blessings!

At age 97 Ida Keeling broke the US sprinting record for her age group, doing a 100 meter dash in under 52 seconds. More impressive is the fact that she only started running at the age of 67. Keeling took up running to get over her depression. Life has not been easy for her. She lost her husband at age 42 to heart attack. She lost her two sons to gruesome homicides. Then finally when her brothers passed away she took to running to lift her depression at the urging of her daughter. And she has never looked back since then. Ida Keeling meets our definition of an yogi: not allowing life’s setbacks to get to her, staying active and fit, and counting her blessings everyday.

Here is her mantra for life: “Don’t wait for somebody to love you; love yourself. Do what you need to do, not what you want to do. Eat for nutrition, not for taste. And try to stay calm if you can.”

Why You Are Not Trapped By Your Genes

Gene Trap

I have a friend who has high cholesterol. “It is my genes. My dad also had high cholesterol,” he says. Many of us feel trapped by our genes. We feel that our fate is sealed because of the genes we have inherited. We have this feeling that we have ticking time bombs in our bodies that we are helpless to control. Here are four things you need to know:

1. Genes have to “express” themselves

One way to understand genes is think of them as if they are “computer programs”. Just like computer programs can do nothing unless they are “run”, genes are also dormant until they “express” themselves. Just because you inherited a bad gene does not mean that it has to express itself. Without this happening the gene has no direct influence on your health.

2. You inherit more than your genes

How much of my friend’s high cholesterol is attributable to the genes he inherited? One thing that we often overlook is that we inherit more than our genes from our parents. We inherit our food habits and life-style habits from our parents too. A large portion of my friend’s high cholesterol is likely a result of the food habits and life-style habits that he has inherited from his dad, rather than his genes. The amount of sugar and fried food he eats and the way he manages stress may be things he has learnt from his dad, and this may be a bigger influence on his cholesterol than the genes he got from his dad.
