Super Food Berry Smoothie

Super Berry Smoothie

In the mornings, I’m often pulling out my Vitamix and whipping up a healthy power smoothie for breakfast. It’s a great convenient way of getting a good intake of fresh fruit and veg as well as a good antioxidant, protein and fiber hit before I start work for the day.

I try and vary the smoothies I make each day and use different types of whole fruits or vegetables that will help boost the immune system, and fill me up with plant based fiber. Fiber speeds up the movement in the intestinal tract and is great for treating digestive disorders; it also delays glucose absorption keeping blood sugar more stable.

When I make my smoothies, I often make them up as complete meal replacements, so I make sure I boost them up with extra nutrients such as omega 3 and protein, so much better then a store bought option because you know exactly what’s in it. Continue reading

Kabir The Poet Saint

Kabir Poet Saint

In 1440 a boy was born to an unwed Brahmin girl in India. Rather than bring shame to herself and her family she chose to abandon the baby. A Muslim weaver called Niru found the boy and took him home to his wife Nima. Since the couple was childless they joyfully adopted him. They soon named the boy Kabir.

Niru and Nima were poor weavers and Kabir was raised in poverty. What made things even more difficult was that Kabir was not a normal child and had strong spiritual tendencies. It is said that even in his childhood he would sing devotional songs and that people in the neighborhood were perplexed at this strange phenomenon. Niru passed away when Kabir was ten and the responsibility to keep the household going fell on his shoulders. Things were not easy for Nima as Kabir would routinely give away the money he collected from the sale of cloth to the poor. While weaving cloth he would go in a spiritual trance and stop weaving and sit in meditation for hours.

As Kabir grew up his spiritual hunger increased and he began looking for a guru. In those days there was a renowned teacher called Ramanand. Unfortunately for Kabir he was an orthodox Brahmin and would not take a Muslim as his disciple. To get around this problem Kabir devised a clever plan. He knew that Ramanand went to the banks of the river Ganges for a bath everyday before dawn. He then slept on the stairs so that Ramanand would not see him in the dark and would step on him. Kabir’s plan worked. When Ramanand stepped on him he was so startled that he cried, “Ram! Ram!” (Equivalent to exclaiming “Oh God!”) Kabir immediately leapt up and touched Ramanand’s feet claiming that he had just been initiated as a disciple. When Ramanand protested Kabir responded, “Is there anything more powerful than the name of God when initiating a disciple?” Ramanand immediately saw that this was no ordinary boy and accepted him as his disciple. Kabir made spectacular spiritual progress under the guidance of his guru and in a few years even surpassed his guru. Continue reading

The Lone Man

Lone Man
One day, there was a catastrophic event that caused all humans on Earth to die. To sort things out, everyone went to Heaven.

God came in and said, “I want the men to make two lines. One line for the men who dominated their women on Earth and the other line for the men who were dominated by their women. Also, I want all the women to go with St. Peter.”

Soon the women were gone and there were two lines.

The line of men who were dominated by their women was 1000 miles long, and there was only one man in the other line.

God became angry and said, “You men should be ashamed of yourselves. I created you in my image and you were all whipped by your mates. Look at the only one of my sons who stood up and made me proud. Learn from him!

Tell them, my son, how did you manage to be the only one in this line?”

The man replied, “I don’t know, my wife told me to stand here.”

Ego Versus Healthy Self-Esteem

Eckhart Tolle in this wonderful video warns us of the dangers of remaining stuck in “healthy self-esteem”. As long as the self is identified with form and our self-esteem comes from comparing our state with others, then in the long-term this will prove deeply dissatisfying. Our true long term fulfillment comes from going deeply within and identifying ourselves with our true Self. This journey is a journey of yoga and out of ego-based self-esteem.

Six Things To Put On Your Do-Not-Do List

Do not do list

There is lot of advice on what we should be doing to be successful. This essay instead focuses on things we should avoid. If you avoid the following then you will not only find success but your success will be more meaningful:

1. Worry about things not in your control

A lot of energy goes in our thoughts. If we put our energy into non-productive thoughts then we take it away from thoughts that could be more productive. If you catch yourself spending too much time worrying about something, ask yourself the question: What can I do about it? If there is something you can do about it then force yourself to put this down on paper and elaborate your ideas. If nothing can be done then force yourself to stop thinking about it. Or better still discuss your worry with somebody else who may help you think of something you may be be overlooking to solve the issue.

2. Aspire for things that feed your ego

We spend a lot of our energy spinning on a wheel of ego-driven desires. It makes sense to step back and question our motives. Ask yourself: Why am I doing this? What do I want to get out from this? Many of our actions are done with the false belief that when we satisfy the needs of our ego then it would make us happy. Be warned: Feeding the ego is like feeding a bottomless well. Ideally our actions and energy should go only in the following three directions: Continue reading
