The Organic Advantage

A recently published article has provided tantalizing clues on the benefits of eating organic food. The study compared fruit flies grown on organic banana, raisins, soybeans, and potato versus those fed on conventional produce. Flies raised on diets made from organically grown produce had greater fertility and longevity. In addition certain organic foods provided greater activity and resistance to stress when compared with conventional produce. This is one of the first studies to clearly demonstrate that organic food provides direct health benefits.

There have been previous studies that have shown that organic foods have increased amounts of vitamins, carotenoids, unsaturated fatty acids, and polyphenols. However the corresponding health benefits of consuming organic food have till now not been clearly established. This study now does that. It clearly demonstrates the benefit of eating organic food.

While the results of this study are remarkable and path breaking, what is even more remarkable is that this study is the brainchild of 13-year-old Ria Chhabra! One day when Ria found her parents arguing about the benefits of organic food, she decided to conduct an experiment to settle the issue. For her middle school science project she evaluated the content of Vitamin C in organic produce and found organic performed much better than conventional produce. Encouraged, she decided to take this a step further. She wanted to clearly establish the impact of organic food on overall health. She began researching on the Internet. She determined that studying the impact of organic food on fruit flies would suit her purpose. She then e-mailed several professors who maintained fruit fly laboratories. She hit pay dirt when Dr. Johannes Bauer of Southern Methodist University in Dallas responded positively. Continue reading

Yoga Is About Having Control Over My Emotions

Ruth Yoga Story

I was never the athletic type and I grew up convinced that sports & me just weren’t meant to be. At school I never joined a team, I was never into after school activities and when I started college all I did as an effort to beat the laziness was to get a membership at a nearby gym -of course that didn’t last long. So as I got older (and based on previous experiences) I started to see myself as the anti-sports girls who even took pride in saying she was bad at any athletic activity!

Looking back I can now confess that it was sort of hurtful to acknowledge the fact that I was REALLY BAD at something and to have the hopeless feeling that I was never going to succeed – I think am sure that had a negative impact on my self esteem.

One thing I liked from the gym is that they had yoga classes and I started joining them every day I could. The classes were pretty basic and the teacher didn’t explain much of what was happening but I liked the personal experience I got from it (i.e. not having to compete/race/beat anybody). But the classes didn’t justify the gym membership so I quit a few months later.

It all changed when I tried running and long story short: running changed my life, it changed me and it changed how I saw myself as I wasn’t the less then average girl anymore! Instead I became the -I will make myself run this far today- girl. Continue reading

Let’s Talk About Nuclear Power!

Lets Talk Nuclear

A stranger was seated next to a pretty girl on an airplane when the he turned to her and said, “Let’s talk. I’ve heard that flights go quicker if you strike up a conversation with a fellow passenger.”

The pretty girl, who had just opened her book, closed it slowly and said to the stranger, “What would you like to talk about?” She really wanted to get on with her book, but decided to first deal with the stranger’s request.

“Oh, I don’t know,” said the stranger. “How about nuclear power?”

“OK,” she said. “That could be an interesting topic, but let me ask you a question first. A horse, a cow, and a deer all eat the same stuff – grass. Yet a deer excretes little pellets, while a cow turns out a flat patty, and a horse produces clumps of dried grass. Why do you suppose that is?”

The stranger, visibly surprised by the girl’s intelligence, thinks about it and says, “Hmmm, I have no idea.”

The girl opened her book and began reading. After a few moments she raised her head and said, “Do you really feel qualified to discuss nuclear power when you don’t know shit?” She then continued reading with the smug satisfaction that she would not be disturbed again!

Vow Of Silence

Vow Of Silence

A monk joined a monastery and immediately took a vow of silence. He vowed that he would break his silence every five years and speak only two words every five years.

Accordingly he remained silent for five years, and then went to the Abbot, who congratulated him on his achievement. He was anxious to know what two words the monk will speak.

The monk just said, “Bed hard.”

Five more years pass. The monk sees the Abbot again.

He then speaks the following two words: “Food bad.”

Five years later, the monk again visits the Abbot and says, “I quit.”

“Well, you might as well quit,” the Abbot responded. “You’ve been complaining ever since you got here!”

Does not matter if we speak less or more, but if complain is all we do, then how is it going to do us any good? Remaining silent but having a constant dialog of complaints within is no different. Instead when you replace complaints with gratefulness you will witness a transformation that will astonish you.
