Seven Sleep Surprises

Seven Sleep SurprisesWe tend to take sleep for granted. If there is some work to be done, we usually squeeze in the extra hours at the expense of our sleep. We then hope to catch up with our sleep in the next few days. In most cases this is fine until we have built up too big a sleep deficit. Then our sleep shortage catches up and we see its effect on our health and mental wellbeing. Here are some facts about sleep that may surprise you:

1. You can live longer without food than sleep.
In experiments on rats, sleep deprivation for between 2 to 5 weeks led to death. Scientists do not expect this period to be much different for humans. On the other hands you can survive without food for many months longer. When it comes to our health we obsess on food, but sleep may be equally if not more important.

2. You need more sleep than you think.
A study done by Harvard Medical School of 82,000 nurses showed an increased risk of death among those who slept less than 6 hours a night. If you are sleeping 6 hours or less then you need to make sure that you get at least 7 hours of sleep. If you find it hard to keep your eyes open during the day and periodically nod off, then you need more sleep. Most of us think we get adequate sleep but unless you are sleeping 8-10 hours per day you may be getting less than you need. Continue reading

Amazing Love Story

Last year (2011) Sam Goddard – a vibrant, good looking 24 year-old man – was playing in a charity soccer game when he suffered a series of massive strokes that left him fighting for his life. Doctors gave him just five percent chance for survival. They also told the family that if he even survived he would be unable to walk or talk. At one point the doctors told his fiance, Sally, that the best outcome for Sam and his family was that he get an infection and die.

Fortunately for Sam, Sally was not the one to give up easily. She took him home to his family and started researching on the web. She found that some people in similar situations were getting amazing results from this discredited sleeping pill. Thus started a period of experimentation that led to this amazing breakthrough.

This is a story of a medical miracle where an ordinary sleeping pill is able to awaken portions of the brain that are otherwise unreachable. But more than the story of a miracle medical finding, this is an incredible love story. The love story between Sam Goddard and Sally Nielson shows us the incredible and beautiful power of love. It shows us that when love reaches a state of egolessness then it turns into a deep yogic journey and becomes something divine.

Who Sneezed?Stalin is giving a speech in a small auditorium. During a pause, someone in the audience sneezes.

Looking up, Stalin asks, “Who sneezed?”

No one answers.

Stalin orders the guards to escort the last three rows of people outside, where they are executed.

Stalin then asks, “Now, who sneezed?”

Again, no one answers.

Again, Stalin orders the guards to escort the last three rows outside. Shots are heard.

Again, Stalin asks, “Now! Who sneezed??”

A small, bespectacled man in the second row raises his hand and says, “Um, I did, comrade.”

To which Stalin replies, “Bless you.”

… and then continues his speech.

Eckhart Tolle On Spiritual Awakening

Eckhart Tolle, in this very short video, explains that spiritual awakening is usually preceded with an inner willingness to shift one’s perspective. This shift takes us from focussing on the form, to instead focus on the space in which the form is happening. When this shift happens we are “awakened” spiritually and we begin to experience the present moment as something that all there is. Ekhart Tolle tells us to get off the mad horse driven by desire that give us nothing but suffering, and instead to awaken into the full expression of the present moment.

Crazy Like A Horse!

Galloping Horseriding
the horse of habits
galloping
in glee
carried away
mounted
on the steed of desires
whipped ceaselessly
by hopes and fears. . .

dismount,
oh dervish!

and roam free!
