The Low Down On Coffee

The Low Down On CoffeeAs the quintessential morning ‘comfort food,’ coffee is consumed to the tune of 350 million cups per day in America. And for good reason. Aside from the solace of a warm cup in your hand, coffee offers an energy boost, along with improved mood and enhanced concentration. But due to its high caffeine content and addictive qualities, coffee often gets a bad rap. And with so much conflicting information out there, it’s hard to know what to believe.

So here’s the good news:

Combat Depression and Parkinsons: All coffee drinkers know that a good cup of Joe leaves you feeling a little bit happier than before you drank it. This is, of course, primarily due to the caffeine, which affects the feel-good neurotransmitters in the brain, serotonin and dopamine. The Nurses’ Health Study has shown that women who drank 4+ cups of coffee each day had a 20% reduction in depression compared with women who drank 1 cup or less. And speaking of dopamine, the neurotransmitter that is deficient in Parkinson’s disease, studies show a 30% reduced risk of developing Parkinsonʼs disease among coffee drinkers, again due the caffeine and subsequent boost in dopamine. Postcard From Italy

SpaghettiFor several years, a rich businessman had been having an affair with an Italian woman. One night, she confided to him that she was pregnant.

Not wanting to ruin his reputation or his marriage, he offered her a large sum of money if she would go back to Italy to secretly have the child. Also, if she stayed in Italy to raise the child, he would provide child support until the child turned 18.

She agreed, but asked how he would know when the baby was born?

To keep it discrete, he told her to simply mail him a post card, and write ‘Spaghetti’ on the back when the child was born. He would then arrange for the Child Support Payments to begin.

One day, about 8 months later, he came home to his confused wife. ‘Honey,’ she said, ‘You received a very strange post card today.’

‘Oh, just give it to me and I’ll explain it later,’ he said.

The wife obeyed and watched as her husband read the card, turned white, and fainted.

On the card was written:

Spaghetti, Spaghetti, Spaghetti, Spaghetti, Spaghetti.
Three with meatballs, two without.
Send extra sauce

Nine Secrets Of Long Life

Stamatis Moraitis

Stamatis Moraitis

60 year old Stamatis Moraitis felt something was terribly wrong. He seemed out of breath and just climbing the stairs seemed impossible. He took the rest of the day off and went to see his doctor. After looking at the X-rays, his doctor confirmed that he had lung cancer. He gave him no more than nine months to live. Other doctors also confirmed this diagnosis and so Moraitis packed up and left for his native Greece.

The reason? Funerals were much cheaper in Ikaria, Greece, from where he came from. He and his wife moved in with his parents, and he waited to die. Spring turned to summer, and summer turned to fall. Instead of dying he felt better. Slowly his health continued to improve and he came to the realization that he was not dying after all. Today more than 35 years later Moraitis is 97 years old and still alive.

The story of Moraitis would be nothing more than an inspiring tale except that the island of Ikaria is now known as the “Island where people forget to die”. People on this island reach their 90’s at two and half times the rate of those in the US and the rate of dementia is one fourth. People here are living longer and having a better quality of life.

Scientists have been studying residents of Ikaria and other similar pockets of population all over the world where longevity is unusually long. (This includes the Japanese island of Okinawa and Loma Linda in California.) Here is what they have found: Continue reading
