A Different Kind Of Mugging Incident

Mugging KindnessIt was late evening when31 year old social worker, Julio Diaz, dismbarked from his 1 hour commute into a nearly empty station. He was on his way to his favorite restaurant when things took an unexpected turn. A teenage boy approached him and then pulled out his knife.

Diaz did not resist. He quickly gave him his wallet. But as the teen turned to go Diaz stopped him. “Hey wait a minute! If you are going to be up all night robbing people, might as well take my coat to keep yourself warm.”

The teen had a look of uncomprehension on his face. “Why are you doing this?” He asked.

Seeing an opening Diaz continued, “If you were willing to risk your freedom for a few dollars, then I guess you really need the money. Look I am going to have a dinner. Do you mind if you join me?” Continue reading

God Alone Is Enough

God Alone Is Enough

Let nothing upset you,
let nothing startle you.
All things pass;
God does not change.
Patience wins
all it seeks.
Whoever has God
lacks nothing:
God alone is enough.

A Lawyer’s Dying Wish

Dying LawyerA lawyer was on his deathbed in his bedroom, and he called to his wife.

She rushed in and said, “What is it, honey?”

He told her to run and get the Bible as soon as possible. Being a religious woman, she thought this was a good idea.

She ran and got it, prepared to read him his favourite verse or something of the sort.

He snatched it from her and began quickly scanning pages, his eyes darting right and left.

The wife was curious. “What are you doing, honey?” she asked.

“I’m looking for loopholes!” he shouted.

Yoga’s Two Paths

Hatha Yoga or Yoga postures are a great way to connect the mind with the body and become whole. But what next? Here the greatest expounder of Hatha Yoga, B.K.S. Iyengar talks about the effect of Hatha Yoga. He says that Hatha Yoga “Opens up the channel both ways”. This means one can then glide down the channel to external pleasures or to go higher towards internal bliss. The choice is ours.

Most of us use the system of doing yoga postures to enjoy better health, improved mental balance, and greater flexibility. We then leverage these benefits to find happiness. The question before us is: do we want to find happiness outside ourselves or inside? If we are convinced that the quest for external happiness just strengthens the ego and leads us nowhere then we must look inwards. To do this we must adopt the full system of eight limbs of yoga. Our focus then moves from just doing yoga postures to the full system including life-style changes, breathing exercises, and meditation.
