A man was ill and taken to a saint known to perform miraculous cures. He was not impressed to see that the saint was unwell. So he asked, “Why don’t you perform a miracle and cure yourself? You have cured so many, why not do it on yourself?”

The saint smiled and said in a faint voice, “If the Divine wishes, miracles happen. I do nothing!”

In this short story lies the essence of miracles. They are a form of surrender.

When the ego dissolves, miracles manifest effortlessly. Miracles do not happen on the bidding of the ego. Rather they reflect the Divine will.

When our every breath is completely surrendered to the Divine then every breath becomes a miracle.

Ordinary thing happening around us seems like a dance of miracles. Obstacles dissolve and doors that were shut in our face fly open.

A boy was born to a couple after eleven years of marriage. They were a loving couple and doted on the boy. When the child was around two years old, one morning the husband saw a medicine bottle open. He was running late so he asked his wife to cap the bottle and keep it safely in the cupboard. His wife, preoccupied in the kitchen forgot about the matter.

The boy happened to come upon the bottle and drank the medicine. The medicine was meant for adults in small dosages. When the child collapsed his mother hurried him to the hospital, where he was in intensive care. The mother was stunned by this and was terrified to face her husband. When the distraught father came to the hospital, he looked at his wife and uttered just ten words.

He said, “I am with you, darling. I belong to you.”

The husband’s totally unexpected reaction caught the wife off guard. She fell in his arms and began sobbing uncontollaby releasing her pent up grief.

The husband was extremely upset but he was quick to size up the situation. The child was ill. He may or may not survive. There is no point in finding fault with the mother. Besides, if only he had taken time to keep the bottle away, this would not have happened. No one is to be blamed. She was in distress too. What she needed at that moment was consolation and sympathy. That is what he gave her.

If everyone can look at life with this kind of perspective, there would be fewer problems in the world. Take off all your envies, jealousies, unforgiveness, selfishness, blame, and fears and you will find things are not as difficult as you think.

When the quantum theory was being formulated, Einstein was already a world famous physicists and his opinion carried a lot of weight. Unfortunately the basic ideas of quantum theory did not gel with Einstein and he was radically opposed to them. In a famous statement Einstein said, “I don’t believe God plays dice with the Universe”. Einstein did not like the probabilistic nature of the equations that described the behavior of atoms and molecules. His guts told him that “Reality could not behave in such a manner” and though the weight of scientific evidence pointed in this direction he opposed the new theories. Einstein was eventually sidelined and Quantum theory came to become accepted.

This story illustrates that scientists are humans and they have biases like the rest of us. This makes accepting new ideas that work against prevailing bias difficult. Max Plank summed this up as follows:

“New scientific truth does not triumph by convincing its opponents and making them see the light, but rather because its opponents eventually die, and a new generation grows up that is familiar with it.”

The case of Dr. Ignaz Semmelweis is illustrative. He was a Hungarian Doctor who lived in the early nineteenth century. He discovered that if doctors would wash hands in obstetrical clinics before examining their patients that would reduce incidence of puerperal fever. In those days puerperal fever was common and there was a mortality rate of about 20% as a result. Unfortunately fellow doctors rejected his ideas, even after he published is findings in various publications showing that the practice of washing hands could reduce mortality below 1%. It was only after his death that his ideas gained widespread acceptance, while in the meantime countless patients died needlessly.
